Difference
between grain bins and silos
Silo - storage for various bulk solids. It can be cement and
various grains, and flour, and various products and semi-finished products of
mining or other production. They are widely in demand in construction, in the
food industry, in agriculture, in various industries. The cylindrical shape of
the silo provides maximum strength with maximum volume.
Silo for grain is intended for receiving, storage, cooling,
and drying of grain, to protect grain from the effects of natural factors,
carrying out loading and unloading operations. Silos for grain storage,
depending on the technical specifications of the customer, can be equipped with
supports and auxiliary metal structures (stairs, canopies), as well as equipped
with forced ventilation systems.
Depending on the characteristics of the stored material and
the need for storage conditions, the hopper and silos can be equipped with
additional equipment at the request of the customer. The size and equipment of
silos and bins with various auxiliary equipment depends mainly on the purpose
of their use and the conditions of the production site.
The difference
between silos and bins is that:
• In a metal silo, the height of the vertical part of the cylinder exceeds one and a half diameters. This rule applies to silos with a diameter of less than 18 m (for large silos, the ratio of the height of the vertical part to the diameter may be less than 1.5).
• In a metal bin, the height of the vertical part (cylinder or parallel piped) does not exceed one and a half minimum size in the plan (diameter or smaller side of the rectangle).
• The collapse plane drawn from the lower point of the vertical part (through the intersection of the funnel and the vertical wall) at maximum filling crosses the free surface of the bulk material inside the hopper.
• Accordingly, the silo is a cylindrical, higher and narrower vessel compared to the grain bin.
If it is necessary to prevent freezing of the medium stored
in a steel silo, the outer surface of the tank is insulated during
installation. To protect against corrosion, the metal surfaces of the silos are
coated with specialized varnishes and paints. These works are carried out
during installation.
This is a prefabricated structure, it has a cylindrical
shape, and can be made in the form of a conical or flat-bottomed hopper. If it
is necessary to temporarily overexpose crops, wet or dry, then a conical design
is suitable. For cases when the crop is planned to be stored for a year or
more, a flat-bottomed hopper is best suited.
This equipment provides for the use of thermometer systems;
they are used to control humidity and temperature. The price of such a grain
storage bin is not too high, but the crops retain their maximum quality.
Designs are completely leak proof due to disinfection: not a single pest will
penetrate the crop storage system.
For the manufacture of drives, high-strength steel is used
in sheets that are decorated using specialized techniques - this is corrugation
and galvanization. Outwardly, the main parts of the structures look most
spectacularly - supports and walls, as well as original roofs.
A reliable grain storage bin is necessary to keep the crop
in good condition for as long as possible, but special loaders are used to
speed up the harvester itself and reduce harvesting habits. When choosing
equipment, it is important to consider the volume of the crop and the main
characteristics of the combines and tractors that will be used for harvesting.
The price of a car depends on its characteristics. Sometimes
it is optimal to order one large bunker than two medium ones, which will reduce
costs and human resources. It is important to correctly calculate the height of
the combines so that they can reach a large capacity and unload the grain.
Large capacity silos are complex structures intended for the
commercial or industrial storage of large quantities of product. Always in
order to guarantee good grain conservation, special silos are also built, in
which the products are stored in the absence of oxygen, either in a confined
atmosphere or in a controlled atmosphere.
Given the large quantities of products to be managed, bulk
storage centers must be equipped not only with silos of adequate capacity but
also with facilities capable of ensuring rapid and easy execution of reception,
processing, storage, grain control, and emptying.
To ensure the proper functioning of storage centers,
especially during supply periods, it is necessary to examine with particular
attention the dimensioning of the installations and the choice of equipment
used for the reception and handling of the grains.
